We bumped and swayed along all day until it grew dark and we had to make a camp for the night. All the porters began to unload all the luggage and Tshambo gave loud trumpet orders to the other elephants to make a big circle around us to keep us safe for the night. A great big fire was lit and we had our first cup of tea for the day with bully beef sandwiches. We were all very hungry indeed. Shaka, the head porter, gave the elephants their special dinner of grass and tasty leaves with a few bananas to give them extra energy and the whole camp settled down for a good nights sleep.
As I lay on my camp bed I could hear lions roaring and coughing as they went about their hunting by the light of the moon. I was only scared a little bit because I knew that, with the big fire Shaka had made and Tshambo protecting us, the lions would not come near our camp.

I didn't remember any more until the next morning when Shaka woke me and said that breakfast was ready.
